5/3 - 6/15: The Whole World is a Single Flower

by Nicole Skibola

Opening Reception:
Sunday, May 3, 3-5pm

The Whole World is a Single Flower is an exhibition of new woodblock prints made by Bolinas based artist Nicole Skibola. This series of woodblocks are made in the Japanese style of mokuhanga - which follows the tradition of ukiyo, directly translated as “the floating world.” Delicate, water-based prints explore a sense of place and specifically the spirit of place: the moon over a lake before a night swim, the texture of a granite stone from Mt. Tamalpais, the electric first blooms of spring in West Marin. Each work is a collaboration with material and the sensitivity to to a myriad of technical conditions including the imperfections in a handmade piece of kozo paper, the grain of a block of wood or the gentle watery impressions that each amount of pressure leaves behind. Through experiments with depth, softness of line and gradient and texture of color, the images live in a realm between painting and printmaking. Most prints in this show are considered in two distinct color ways and textural explorations - the artist’s reflection of seasons and the elemental experience of the natural world in constant flux in and around us. This show weaves together the emotion of personal experience with collective myth of place and time - an artist’s inquiry into how the natural world and our inner landscapes are in constant dialogue, the boundaries of all things eventually dissolving.
